William Hayward Wiant, 86, of Lunsford Street Weston passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born in Lewis County on September 3, 1930: son of the late Albert R. Wiant, Sr. and Hila (Rogers) Wiant. On March 16, 1956, he married Mary Ellen (Pumphrey) Wiant, who survives. Hayward is also survived by one child: Rita Ann (Dale) Warrick of Doylestown, OH, two grandchildren: Christine Crum and Megan Whiting, and six great grandchildren: Joshua, Nathaniel and Cora Crum and Evan, Emma and Eli Whiting. Also surviving is one brother: Virgle (Joanie) Wiant of Buckhannon, three sisters: Marie (Hartzel) Waugh, Nora (Quenton) Burkhammer and Ruby Metz all of Weston and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Hayward was preceded in death by one brother: Albert R. Wiant, Jr. and three sisters: Leona Mick, Irene Messenger and Mildred Craig. Hayward was a barber and owner and operator of Wiant’s Barber Shop of Weston for several years. He attended the Bendale United Methodist Church of Weston where he was popular with the kids because he would see that they had chewing gum. Younger in life, he was a fox chaser and now he enjoyed his flower gardening. Mr. Wiant was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He spent three years and nine months on the USS Strubling, DD-867 Destroyer. Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 10 a.m. until 1p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Ron Brown officiating. Interment will follow services in the Weston Masonic Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the US Navy and the Lewis County Honor Guard.
