Joseph James Harvey, 92, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of January 6, 2017 at Avalon Nursing Center. Born on August 1, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine Bachman Harvey. Surviving is his beloved wife of 70 years, the former Ruth M. Reiter, whom he married on August 10, 1946.

Joseph graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1950 with a degree in Education. From 1959 until his retirement in 1989, he worked as a Health and History Teacher for Shenango School District. He coached Junior High Basketball and was the Assistant Football Coach for Shenango. Joseph also was the first teacher to teach CPR in Lawrence County and certified over 100 students every year. He served his country as a Radar Man 3rd Class for the U.S. Navy during World War II. An avid sports fan, he loved all of Pittsburgh’s sports teams.

In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by his sons, Joseph A. Harvey and wife Marie and Gary R. Harvey and wife Linda, all of New Castle; brother, Robert E. Harvey of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Joe Harvey, Chris Harvey, Annlyn Harvey, Rachel McMichael and husband Joe, and Jason Harvey; and great-grandchildren, Aodhan, Patrick, Victoria, and Sky'Ler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles E. Harvey.

Visitation will be held Monday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:30am at the funeral home, officiated by Reverend Dennis Bupp. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites at the funeral home.

Interment will take place in Parkside Cemetery.
