Merle Walters

Merle D. Walters Merle Dwane Walters, 82, a long-time resident of Ludlow, passed away peacefully on Saturday (November 26, 2016) while close to his family in Johnstown. Born May 18, 1934, in Wetmore, he was a son of the late Charles and Mae Walters. He was married for 41 years to Patricia Ann Gibson Walters who preceded him in death. Merle worked for National Fuel Gas as a Corrosion Specialist. During the Korean War, he served with the US Navy aboard the USS Hornet. Throughout his years, Merle enjoyed woodworking, gardening and home improvement projects. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and helping his neighbors. Surviving are two sons, Steven (Jean) Walters of Concord, OH and Charles "Chuck" Walters of Cary, NC; a daughter, Pamela Shiley of Johnstown; and grandchildren, Georgia and Thomas Walters, Kelsey Shiley (David) Jancaro and Jessi Shiley. Also surviving are a brother, Dean Walters; sisters, Virginia Zeeder and Patricia Lucia; a half-brother, Robert Lundin; and half-sisters, Marian McClintock and Lauren Okruch. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Edith Walters; a brother Gerald Walters; sisters, Beulah Kirsch and June Cadle; and a half-brother, Richard Walters. Friends will be received Thursday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with the Rev. W. Craig Smith, pastor of the Mt. Jewett/Hazel Hurst United Methodist Churches, officiating. Burial will be in Gibbs Hill Cemetery. Online condolences can be expressed at www.cummingsfh.com
