Ernest G. Woodford KANE Ernest G. "Woody" "Poot" Woodford, 87, formerly of 227 Hacker St., passed away Friday (December 23, 2016) at the Lutheran Home at Kane. He was born in Sackett, a son of the late William and Mary Jeffords Woodford. On March 23, 1956, he married Anna Mae Johnson who preceded him in death. He has joined his beloved wife and his daughter Anita once again. Ernest attended school in DeYoung at the old school that is now a shooting range. He attended Kane High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was ranked as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. He was a flight engineer of the B-29 Bomber Planes and later served in Civil Defense at Cherry Hill, NC, in maintenance of the planes. Ernest worked for Kane Screens from which he retired after many years employment. He had also worked at Stackpole for a few years. As a young man, he worked the lease lines in Pigs Ear, the Owls Nest area and Sackett. He was also a caretaker for Forest Lawn Cemetery for many years. He was a member of the VFW Lodge #1132 in Kane. He enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Steelers and was a lifetime fan of both teams. He also was an avid fisherman and loved both stream and ocean fishing. He belonged to the local pool leagues and won many trophies for his skills. He pitched horseshoes and Bert (Virgil Johnson) and Ernie were well known in the league as partners and were awarded trophies as well for their championships. He also enjoyed playing Euchre. He traveled a lot while in the military and had many homes. He was always up for a spur-of- the-moment trip and would often pack-up the family and take off for North Carolina, Allentown or to New Castle to his sister Mary's home. He was happiest when he was working and doing things with his hands. Woodworking, gardening and working on cars were favorite pastimes. He was an animal lover and had many loving dogs who brought him great joy over the years. Surviving are a son, Brian Ernest Woodford of Kane; three daughters, Cheryl Anne Powell of Kane, Brenda Woodford of Tenn.; and Rebecca (Bob) Klavhun of Oil City; his sister Mary (Raymond) McCracken of Harlansburg; a sister-in-law Julia (William) Woodford of Lamont; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, parents, and daughter Anita Woodford Menteer, he was preceded in death by brothers, Edgar (Elenore) Woodford, William Woodford, Howard Woodford, Robert Woodford and Joseph "Hobb" (Nina) Magee; and sisters, Jenny (Frank) Warner, Mildren "Mid" (Ken) Eastman of Corry, Elenore (Whitie) Stinore and Grace (Thaddeus) Hollis. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider the needs of the family. The Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
