Lawrence Matthew Friend Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Friend

June 28, 1944-December 24, 2016

Larry died suddenly in Brockville, ON with family and friends close at hand on December 24th. He was born in Pembroke, ON and was the cherished adopted son of Dorothy and Roy Friend of Ottawa who predeceased him by many decades.

Larry lived a good life - a long time public servant, working with Parks, then Heritage Canada on the Heritage Sites and Monuments board as Executive Secretary, he helped to establish policies and plaques on historic sites from coast to coast. It was a passion that although he retired from early, he had great anecdotes and much respect for his distinguished colleagues.

He was an independent world traveller for many years, an outdoors enthusiast, a committed bachelor and pub habitué in his native Ottawa. In 2004 as a late bloomer, he welcomed his beloved son Hugo Friend with whom he spent several very happy and involved years before the onset of illness.

Appreciation is given to the dedicated staff of the palliative care unit at Brockville General Hospital. Friends are invited to share in a Celebration of Life honouring Larry at The Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James Street East, Brockville on Friday, January 20th from 3 - 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Sierra Club of Canada.
