Ruth Allen Obituary

ALLEN, RUTH "ORA" formerly of Lake George, Yarmouth County, NS passed away peacefully on January 12, 2017, surrounded by family, nurses and staff at Hillside Pines in Bridgewater, NS. Ora was born in Kemptville, NS on August 6, 1928, the youngest child of the late Bradford and Clara Ring. Ora was married to the late Lloyd Allen of Forest Glen, NS. They moved to Lake George, NS in 1952 where she was a hard working homemaker. Their door was always open, the teapot was always hot and strangers soon became friends. In 1961, Ora became the first woman in Nova Scotia to enter a pair of oxen in the ox haul at the Western Nova Scotia Exhibition; the forerunner of the Ladies' Ox Haul later held at many exhibitions. After Dad's passing, Mom subsequently moved to Hillside Pines in Bridgewater in January 2014, where her greatest pleasure was visits from family and friends. She especially treasured seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When speech became difficult for Mom, hearing stories of their escapades between their visits would always bring a smile to her face. She was a hardworking, yet kind and gentle lady. Mom will be remembered by family and friends for her homemade bread, doughnuts and tea. Ora is survived by daughters Lynda Mullen of New Ross and Audrey (John) Manzer of Pleasantville; seven grandchildren Aaron (Wanda) Mullen, Tiffany Mullen, Christopher (Meaghan) Manzer, Jana (Nick) Saunders, Jeffrey (Holly) Manzer, Melanie (James) Fahie, and Jody (Merlin) Watt; great-granddaughters Kierstin and Macey Mullen, Mallory and Maria Saunders, Emerson Manzer; great-grandson Wyatt Manzer, baby Manzer-to-be and many nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Ora was predeceased by her husband Lloyd in 2009; son Glendon in 2004; twin sons in infancy; sister Cecile Falkenberg and brother Donald Ring. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth by Mom's request, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 1:00pm at Lake George Cemetery with Rev. Mitchell Foley officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to Hillside Pines Home for Special Care in Bridgewater where Mom was cared for with much love and compassion; Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. We wish to send a special thanks to all the excellent staff at Hillside Pines, who embraced us all like family and who treated Mom like the special lady she was.
