Joyce Carolyn Tinkham Obituary

Tinkham (Smith), Joyce Carolyn-At the age of 93, with her family at her bedside, Joyce passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital, December 8, 2016. Born in Melbourne, Yarmouth County in 1923, she was married for 60 years to the late Wilfrid Neil Tinkham. She is survived by her daughters, Mona Tinkham, Beverley (Paul) Sullivan, Marsha Tinkham (Dan Walsh), Eleanor Tinkham (Jim Parsons), and sons, Bruce (Diane) Tinkham, and Norman (Patricia) Tinkham and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joyce also had many nieces and nephews who she cared for fondly. In addition to her beloved husband, she was predeceased by her sisters Elsie, Lillian, Freida, Elva, Olive and Eunice (infant), and brothers Frank, Fred, Donald, Clark and Ashley (Buddy), as well as her parents Genevieve (Jenny) and Brandon Smith. As a young woman of 17, Joyce gained employment in the town of Yarmouth where she worked until she started her family. Some years later, while still caring for her family she earned her GEDs and eventually began her new career at the L. G. Trask Agency where she worked for 17 years until retirement. During this time, she was a dedicated mother and an active member of her church and community. Although well known for her volunteer contributions, Joyce remained very modest. She was awarded a life membership in the Nova Scotia District of the Canadian Bible Society and served as secretary of the Yarmouth Branch for 18 years. Joyce also spent many years as a member of the Yarmouth Hospital Ladies Auxilliary and was a gift shop volunteer. She was a dedicated member of the Baptist Church, and at Yarmouth North Baptist, she held the posts of Church Clerk (membership), Financial Secretary and Treasurer. She was also a member of the Ladies Bible Class and the Women’s Missionary Society as well as a member of the local Home and School Association and because of these commitments, received an award for her volunteerism in her community. After her retirement, Joyce was fortunate to spend time with her children and grandchildren and other extended family and would never refuse a game of cards. This is where she showed her spunky competitive spirit and her quick mind. She also liked cheering on the Blue Jays and closer to home, quietly supporting her large family’s endeavours. Joyce spent the last four years as a resident at OceanView Manor in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, where she made many new friends of both residents and staff. Her family is grateful to the staff at OceanView and also the staff of EHS and the Dartmouth General Hospital for their attentive care. Friends are invited to share memories of Joyce with her family during a visitation at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth, on Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 7-9 pm. The funeral will be held at Yarmouth North United Baptist Church at 11:00am on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Reverend Bill Newell and Reverend Shawn Kehoe presiding. Reception to follow in the Church Vestry. Interment at a later date. If desired, in memoriam donation to your local Food Bank, or a charity of your choice.
